WHY BRITAIN NEEDS MORE TALENT
A strong manufacturing and engineering base is vital to our economic recovery. But we are failing to attract young people to these exciting careers
Fewer than one in ten engineering professionals are women - the lowest proportion across the EU. This means we are missing out on half of the possible talent pool
WHY WE NEED MORE TALENT
The subject choices made by thirteen year olds have enormous consequences for their future career and also the UK economy.
But recent research shows that young people, especially girls, would not even consider a career in manufacturing or engineering.
Worst still, older girls who would, when given information about manufacturing or engineering , consider a career in the sector, have already made A-level or degree choices that bar the way.
Research also shows that careers advice in school is lacking, with 9 in 10 of girls saying they cannot remember receiving any career advice at all about manufacturing and engineering.
Talent 2030 aims to engage young people before they make their GSCE and A-level choices, to help them consider careers in these vital sectors.
